ABOUT:
This is one of the bigger purchases I made on my recent inventory trip to France - a timeless and elegant solitaire with 1.87 carat old mine cut diamond that is elongated / oval in shape. I usually find these in cushioned or round shapes so when I saw the oval, I thought it would be fun and unique addition.

Found in Paris - I wish I knew the stories this one could tell. The diamond is certainly an antique old mine cut with large and irregular octagonal open culet that and a cut that is not perfectly symmetrical which we love and expect to find on antique diamonds. It's one of those things that makes each one unique and one of a kind as no two are ever exactly alike. But this one has more to its story in that the girdle is faceted and polished, which is a more modern technology in the diamond world.

As such, it still has the classic old mine cut look but with the added brilliance and fire of the more modern glow up that it has had : ). I wonder if it was always oval and someone just had the girdle polished - perhaps the frost of the original girdle had reflected around the stone and someone desired to improve it - Or if it was a cushion cut stone originally that was re-cut to oval. We don't really know its back story but the result is a timeless and classic old cut diamond ring in an elegant four pronged setting that is ready for daily wear.

The setting is crafted in 18k white gold with the French hallmarks as such and the classic Edwardian to Art Deco detailing with the open work circular designs at each shoulder.

I don't prefer to grade my antique diamonds with the Four C's grading scale which came about way later for machine cut diamonds with mathematically perfected facets. The scale does not do antique stones justice as they were expertly hand cut to their best advantage, in a much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut diamonds made each year now. Their uniqueness and quirks are expected and part of their charm, but this one actually came to me with a certificate from Carat Gem Lab in France (there is no GIA in France).

It is grades as I in color, SI1 in clarity, but as is the case with many old hand cut stones, it faces up brighter and it is eye clean. The stone has no external characteristics on the report (no chips, nicks, indented natural inclusions, etc.) and just a random smattering of the smallest speck inclusions so it is a wonderful stone and beautiful to wear.

It comes as pictured in an antique box that is not original to the piece, but we antique jewelry addicts love these old boxes so they are valuable and collectible on their own and I thought the piece deserved a good home storage : )

Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

The diamond is eye clean with no damage. A beautiful color and clarity with no nicks or chips. Even under magnification it has a wonderful clarity.

Preowned but in otherwise excellent condition. The prongs are ready for daily wear.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
