The Story
I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered one piece at a time from around the world. Some examples seen in the last photo - thanks for stopping by!
ABOUT:
Beautifully sparkling early 1900s antique sapphire ring surrounded by a halo of rose cut diamonds.
Wonderful color to the natural sapphire that is somehow a combination of rich greens and blues. In some light it appears blue with teal accents, and in direct light, a sort of olive green glow from within. A really wonderful and interesting stone with rutile silk inclusions that can catch the light to add to the glow effect, similar to a star sapphire but without the star pattern. While many in the gem world consider inclusions an "imperfection", when it comes to sapphires, they can often actually enhance the color and beauty of the stone.
I had a dealer friend in Paris once tell me that these sapphire halos are among the most popular ring styles in France where they prefer the more subtle sapphire colors over more vibrant gemstones like rubies and emeralds or large diamonds. I have found in my years of selling that they are very popular here as well! I get so many requests for them that I've found I've had a hard time sourcing them so I was excited to find this one with its antique sparkle and unique coloring.
Found in France but it is crafted in 14k gold so we know it is not made there (as French made pieces are always 18k gold). The halo is topped in silver as was customary to set the diamonds in a white metal. The shank has a rosy antique patina. Lovely!
Antique boxes, props, staircases and bannisters ; ) not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8 3/4.
It weighs 4.4 grams.
Ring face 15.7x13mm and 8.7mm tall off the finger.
The sapphire is 9x7mm. The diamonds in the halo are 2.5mm each give or take.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
I'm not sure if this was always a ring. There's a little gold nib inside the halo on one end and the shoulders of the ring show connection points on the inside of the rings face but it certainly wears beautifully as a ring and while wearing appears to have always been one.
The sapphire has natural inclusions which carry up to the surface leaving two hairlines at the surface, one of which that is icy in color. The stone is stable, it's just a natural characteristic of it. There is a second scratch on the other side. In ambient light these things are not very noticeable at all, but are highlighted in direct sunlight, so many of the listing photos will make it appear much worse than it actually is, but at the same time, I did want to show the color variations of the fabulous stone in direct light, as it can sometimes appear more green than blue. Overall it has a beautiful sheen and polish, not an overall dull or matte finish from a lot of abrasions which we sometimes find from the period.
Typical antique diamonds with faint natural inclusions but often times rose cuts are super frosty and thinly sliced discs whereas these have a nicer clarity and a bit of a dome to them.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
I would be delighted if you'd follow me in my shop. Thanks for stopping by!
