ABOUT:
Not your average antique diamond solitaire! The mounting of this ring is just delicious with the tall prongs holding up the chunky eye clean old mine cut diamond. The diamond measures just under one full carat. Flared tulip like details at each shoulder that have a glowing, rich and warm antique rosy gold patina.
I love the way the setting props up the diamond to take in light from all sides, making the chunky old cut so bright and lively. You can see the pavilion of the diamond when viewing the ring from the side and the stone is almost as deep as it is width wise face up.
No hallmarks remain but tests at 10k gold.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and the pictures can make it difficult to see scale. Antique box is not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8 3/4 - you'd want to discuss sizing with your local jeweler first as shank is a bit thin at the back and opinions vary greatly with modern jewelers working on antiques. Usually they say a sizing within 2 sizes is a good guide for what is doable.
The diamond is about 5.6mm, cushion cut and a very chunky cut. It was measured by a gemologist prior to my purchasing and sold to me as .95 carat.
The piece weighs 2 grams. It stands 6.9mm off the finger to the top of the diamond.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Not even a nibble to the diamond. Typical for antique diamonds cut in a much more limited supply, there is a very slight warmth but it faces up brighter and has amazing light reflectivity, in part due to the way the setting floats the stone up tall. The diamond is eye clean with just the faintest specks seen only under very strong magnification.
There are some scratch marks to the gold inside the ring, not seen in any way at all while wearing, it was likely just tested there.
I often get the question about daily wear and this one is a bit on the fence. There is one worn prong but the other five well surround the stone. The prongs have good length and the stone is well held, but it is a tall setting and the prongs are on the daintier side. This is just how it was made and it would be a pity to mar the original antique setting with super thick and chunky prongs. The stone is certainly well held and does not move and the daintier gauge of prongs allows the stone to really float up there and be the star of the show. The stone isn't going anywhere unless really hit with applied force, which is usually the primary concern, but the setting does seem on the delicate side with the daintier prongs. I typically aways recommend gentler wear on my 125 year old plus pieces.
What a fabulous setting. I'm in love with this one.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
