ABOUT:
Can't seem to get enough of these little French diamond dormeuse earrings!
These have an interesting setting with little fleur de lis crown prongs leading up to the rose cuts which are held in a silver bezel and open backs! We love open back rose cuts too for ease of wear as you don't have to worry if they get wet.
I think it's possible they were closed back at one time and were opened to brighten and let the light pass through but they came to me this way. They were made in France but I found and purchased them on my recent sourcing trip to the UK.
This is a pretty fabulous pair with the ornate prongs. The lever backs still have spring and there is a tiny catch to hook the ear wire into. These aren't as finicky to wear as the ones that are inserted from the back of the ear. These are put in at the front and then latched into the levers behind the ear.
Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
The diamonds are each about 5.9-6mm north south by 4.5-4.7mm wide ovals. The pair faces up at about one carat tdw. (Note - Rose cuts are always difficult to estimate without removing them and putting them on a scale which would not do to ruin the antique setting. With the flat backs, rose cuts are spreadier with a lower carat weight typically than modern diamonds with pavilions. If you were to estimate how it "faces up" by millimeter each stones appears around half carat in size, a little over and then with the additional little rose cut accents above.)
15mm top to bottom, the ear pendant parts 5mm deep.
The pair weighs 2.5 grams combined.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
They are 150+ years old with old gold hinges so we don't recommend for 24/7 wear but they are definitely secure to wear. No concern of losing the stones the way they are set in bezels and then also held in prongs. It's just that the lever backs aren't super springy and super lock-y (sorry, I know that isn't a word - tee hee). But they do actually have a small click at closure when you get them hooked into the backs so they do close and stay closed. These are very popular,
Still beautiful and appropriate for gentle handling considering age and fabrication.
The diamond has a triangular flake of loss tucked up under one edge of the bezel that appears as a frosty unpolished spot, and a few other frosty inclusions around the outside edge with a nicer clarity in the middle. The other diamond has some crystal inclusions with a tiny smattering of carbon that is not really eye visible, although the crystals can catch the light. No large glaring inky spots. It's more just speckles and flecks here and there and does not affect the entirety of the stone.
Note that I missed some dustiness to the back when I initially photographed them and gave them better a cleaning for the listing video.
Thanks so much for looking at my items!
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
